Kids Cookin' in 5 Easy Steps

Step #1: Read the Shake Your Pudding recipe out loud to make sure you have all the ingredients and equipment needed and enough time to prepare the recipe. Now is a good time to send the pets to another room - they shouldn't be in the kitchen when you are cooking.

Step #2: Next, clear and clean a work area to prepare the recipe. You can sanitize the counter tops by adding 1 teaspoon bleach to1 quart water in a spray bottle ' let air dry or dry with a paper towel.
Then everyone needs to wash their hands - front and back - between fingers and under nails- in warm, soapy water for about 20 seconds. You can sing the 'Alphabet Song' while you are washing; that takes about 20 seconds. Use paper towels or a clean cloth to dry hands.

Step #3: Set out milk, box of dry pudding, glass measuring cup, tablespoons, and a container with a tight fitting lid. The kitchen can be a really fun place to be, but there are some dangerous things in there ' can you think of any? (Stove, oven, toaster, knives, microwave steam) That's right! Kids need to get permission before they cook. Use hot pads when handling hot pans, pots and dishes; handle knives safely; to be careful with hot liquids; and to tie back long hair and don't wear baggy clothing when cooking. Why shouldn't you wear long, baggy sleeves when you are cooking? (they could catch on fire)

Step #4: Measure accurately! Choose the correct tools to measure ingredients. Use a glass measuring cup for the milk, a tablespoon to measure the pudding and then follow the steps in the recipe.

Step #5: Last but not least, kids can help with clean up, washing dishes and putting ingredients away ' before sampling the final product!

Safety Tip:

All cooks, young and old, need to wash their hands - front and back - between fingers and under nails - in warm, soapy water for about 20 seconds. Teach kids to sing the 'Alphabet Song' while they are washing; that takes about 20 seconds. Use paper towels or a clean cloth to dry hands!
